This blog is intended to bring together Chinatown advocates and urban planners to discuss the sustainability of the Chinatown community, its culture and character.
In 2008, a community planning effort began with the Chinatown Working Group (CWG), bringing together dozens of Chinatown social service and community organizations, eventually including Chinatown labor, tenants and property owners. The CWG won a $150,000 grant from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation to hire an urban planning consultant for the purpose of reviewing the CWG three-year visioning process and recommending possible implementations. Following a legally mandated bid process, CWG voted to hire the Pratt Center for Community Development and the Collective for Community Planning and the Environment.
This blog is independent of either CWG or Pratt. The bloggers here have been involved with the CWG process. Our goal is to open a wide discussion on Chinatown in order to allow CWG’s urban planner to get a glimpse of some of the voices and concerns in and around Chinatown.
